Nevermind and Nothing Like the Sun
Week #8 – March 6
Nevermind
by Nirvana
Little know facts
The album was initially going to be called “Sheep” as a snide commentary on the people who might buy the album.
Geffen Records had low expectations for the album, shipping only 46,521 copies to American retail outlets. They hoped to sell 250,000 copies, but “Smells Like Teen Spirit” blew all sales projections out of the water.
The baby boy on the cover was almost a girl. The photographer did two shoots and preferred a photo of a baby girl, but the record label insisted on using the photo with the baby boy.
Nothing Like the Sun
by Sting
Little know facts
The album’s title comes from Shakespeare’s Sonnet No. 130 (“My mistress’ eyes are nothing like the sun”), which Sting used in the song “Sister Moon”.
The album was influenced by the death of Sting’s mother in late 1986, which contributed to the somber tone of several songs.
The song “They Dance Alone (Cueca Solo)” was inspired by Sting’s witnessing of public demonstrations of grief by the wives and daughters of men missing in Chile, who danced the Cueca with photos of their loved ones pinned to their clothes.
