Pete Townshend’s use of synthesizers was groundbreaking. He used a Lowrey organ and early analog synths to create the iconic loops in “Baba O’Riley” and “Won’t Get Fooled Again,” which was revolutionary for rock music at the time.

The cover photo, showing the band having apparently urinated on a concrete monolith, was inspired by 2001: A Space Odyssey. The location remained a mystery for decades until it was identified as a slag heap near Temple Normanton in Derbyshire.

The album was salvaged from Pete Townshend’s ambitious but abandoned Lifehouse project, a multimedia rock opera exploring themes of technology and spirituality. Many of the songs on Who’s Next were originally written for that concept.

“The Rock Show” and “First Date” were written in direct response to their manager’s complaint that the album lacked a catchy single. Mark Hoppus and Tom DeLonge each went home and wrote those songs in a burst of sarcastic defiance—both became major hits.

This was the first Blink-182 album where the band members were creatively at odds. Hoppus wanted to replicate the success of Enema of the State, DeLonge wanted a heavier sound, and Barker wanted to push musical boundaries. The tension shaped the album’s tone.

Despite the internal struggles, the album debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200, making it the first punk rock album to do so. It also topped charts in Canada and Germany, marking a global breakthrough for the band.
