The album was recorded across three different countries: Australia, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom. This diverse recording process contributed to the unique sound and feel of the album.
The landscapes of New Zealand and Iceland played a significant role in inspiring the album’s panoramic themes. Passenger (Mike Rosenberg) drew from his travels to create a sense of wanderlust and exploration in the music.
The Canadian group The Once, who had previously toured with Passenger, contributed backing vocals to the album. Their collaboration added a rich layer to the album’s vocal harmonies.

Although all the songs were written before the September 11 attacks, the album took on new significance in the aftermath. The dark, introspective themes resonated deeply with the mood of New York City during that time.
The Killers have cited “Turn On The Bright Lights” as a major influence on their debut album “Hot Fuss.” Brandon Flowers even covered “Obstacle 1” at the New York Governors Ball in 2016, highlighting the album’s impact on their music.
Despite its critical acclaim, the album did not perform well on the charts initially. It peaked at only 158 on the Billboard 200 and did not make the top 100 in the UK Albums Chart. However, it has since become a cult classic and is highly regarded in the indie rock scene.
